2025 NFL free agency: Former Chiefs S Justin Reid reportedly joining Saints, who are also bringing back Tyrann Mathieu

Justin Reid and the New Orleans Saints have agreed to a three-year, $31.5 million contract with $22.25 million in guaranteed money, ESPN reports.

The seven-year NFL veteran safety joins New Orleans after three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. There, he’ll play alongside safety and fellow Louisiana native Tyrann Mathieu, who reportedly restructured his contract with the Saints on Tuesday to ensure he remains with the team in 2025.

Reid, 28, started in all but three of Kansas City’s regular-season games since 2022 as the Chiefs advanced to three Super Bowls and won two. He has 10 interceptions and 46 passes defended over the course of his career that also includes four seasons with the Houston Texans.

Reid tallied two interceptions, eight passes defended and 87 combined tackles in 16 games with the Chiefs last season. His exit leaves the Chiefs in need of a free safety.

Reid joins a Saints team that finished in a last-place tie with the Carolina Panthers last season in the NFC South at 5-12. Barring some significant offseason surprise for a team that doesn’t have much salary-cap space, the Saints don’t project as contenders in 2025.

Reid’s new deal is the second of significance in two days for the Saints defense. New Orleans reportedly reached a three-year, $51 million agreement to bring back pass rusher Chase Young on Monday. Young initially joined the Saints on a one-year, $13 million deal last season and now has a long-term contract after tallying 21 quarterback hits and 34 combined quarterback pressures in his first year in New Orleans.
