Venezuelans step up protests after Maduro declares election victory

Thousands of Venezuelans continue to take to the streets of Caracas accusing President Nicolas Maduro, in power for 11 years, of stealing last Sunday’s elections in the South American country. As the protests escalate, fears are also mounting of a confrontation between Maduro’s security forces and the demonstrators. Police have arrested more than 1,000 people and at least 16 people died in the first three days of protests. Airlines started cancelling flights out of Caracas as hundreds tried to leave the country on Wednesday. From Venezuela’s capital, Yan Boechat tells the story in pictures.
