Locals say some regions haven’t seen any rain for three months.
An ongoing heatwave has led to severe drought in some parts of Romania, with a number of lakes drying up and countless crops dying or being damaged.
In the country’s southern Galati county it hasn’t rained for three months, causing the Talabasca lake to be almost entirely deprived of water.
Local residents have expressed their alarm at the situation, with a number bemoaning the fact the country has barely seen rain for so long.
“It is very bad what is happening, if no one doesn’t stand up [sic], this country will be a desert pretty soon,” one local man fears.
Romania is also expected to see significant losses in corn and sunflower crops forcing the country’s agricultural minister to offer compensation to farmers.
The latest crisis comes following another in July. That month, residents across Romania faced a severe water crisis which left them with a rationed water supply due to a prolonged drought and low rainfall.
Villagers in at least six Romanian counties, Constanța, Alba, Dolj, Iași, Prahova, and Gorj were given water rations to help them survive. Specialists reported that water consumption triples during the hot period, overwhelming the capacity of the tanks.
