The match was tied at halftime until forward Mallory Swanson gave the United States a 1-0 lead with 57th-minute goal on an assist from midfielder Korbin Albert. The goal was Swanson’s fourth of the tournament, which makes her tied-for-second among all goal scorers at the Olympics.

The gold medal match was also the United States’ first appearance in the final since 2012, as the U.S. left the 2016 Rio Olympics empty-handed and won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
