AMERICAN THEATRE | Start With Justice

Economic Justice and Labor

Not every company will be able to fully embrace the solidarity economy, but every company can immediately raise the level of workplace democracy and participation (which includes healthy relations with unions). Democracy, however, shouldn’t be fetishized. Those famous practitioners of demokratia, the ancient Greeks, owned slaves, as did our country’s democracy-practicing founders. Democracy is a means to an end, and that end should be closing the gap between the labor and needs of the workers who make the whole thing possible. Anything else is a form of oppression, even if we tell beautiful theatrical stories for a living.
