The northern French town of Arras paid tribute to 57-year-old teacher Dominique Bernard one year on from his murder with a musical ceremony.

A large crowd gathered in the town’s square to remember the secondary teacher, husband and father of three who was murdered at the hands of radicalised former student on 13 October, 2023.

Three others were injured during the attack, which occurred at a high school.

Several ministers including French Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau and close friends and family attended the ceremony, which included live painting, a string and flute ensemble and dance performance.

French President Emmanuel Macron posthumously awarded Bernard the Legion of Honour – the country’s highest civilian decoration – at the teacher’s 2023 funeral service.
