North Korea is sending arms and soldiers to support Russian troops, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.

He made the comments on Sunday during his daily address to the nation, adding Ukraine’s relations with western partners must develop to keep the opposing alliance at bay.

“When we talk about more long-range capability for Ukraine and more decisive supplies for our forces, it is not just a list of military equipment,” he said.

“It is about increasing the pressure on the aggressor, which will be stronger for Russia than they can withstand. And it is about preventing a bigger war.”

The Ukrainian leader said he would continue pursuing his “victory plan” — a proposal that contains the purported correct conditions to bring about an end to the war — to guarantee peace.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has become one of Putin’s key allies since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.

The claim that North Korea is sending soldiers to support Russian troops was first floated on 11 October, after media reports suggested senior officials in Kyiv and Seoul claimed North Korean military engineers were deployed to support Russia target Ukraine with ballistic missiles.

The media report also alleged North Korean troops were fighting in Ukraine.

The Kremlin dismissed the claims, with government spokesperson Dmitry Peskov telling reporters in Moscow: “This looks like another bit of fake news”.

Washington claims Pyongyang has dispatched more than 16,000 shipping containers containing munitions to Russia.
