At least two people have died in Greece after Storm Bora swept through the country, try emergency authorities said on Sunday.

Local officials in Lemnos said the victims were two men aged 57 and 70 who died due to the flash floods caused by the storm.

According to local media, one of the men, a 70-year-old resident, allegedly suffered a fatal head injury after falling on slippery stairs while cleaning his home during the extreme weather.

Officials on another island, Rhodes, known for its tourism industry, said the storm left several roads, bridges, and buildings damaged.

South Aegean regional governor, Giorgos Harzimarkos, said that Rhodes experienced on Saturday a non-stop rainfall for over 16 hours, equivalent to 80% of the water volume accumulated during the deadly late-October flood in Valencia, Spain.

Emergency authorities on the island said they had evacuated scores of people on the island following the storm’s arrival on Saturday.

The Fire Brigade announced that about 1,076 emergency calls were received at its operations centre between Saturday morning and Sunday morning across the country.

Greece’s civil protection service said they have issued an emergency alert, warning of torrential rains and strong winds in the northeast, the centre, and the region around Athens.

The extreme weather is expected to persist in several regions of the country through Monday, December 2, according to the National Meteorological Service of Greece.

Authorities have urged residents there to remain at home and asked schools to be closed on Monday while emergency services remain “on maximum alert.”.
