The UK’s gas stores have fallen to “concerningly” low levels as plunging temperatures have strained supplies, the owner of British Gas has warned.

A cold snap over the past five days has pushed temperatures down to close to minus 20 degrees in some parts of the UK.

As of Thursday, stocks at UK gas storage sites were 26 per cent lower than they were at the same time last year, leaving them about half full, according to a statement on Friday from Centrica.

The cold conditions in the UK, combined with the end of Russian gas pipeline supplies through Ukraine on December 31, meant that gas inventory levels across the UK were down said the statement.

“The UK’s gas storage levels are concerningly low,” said Chris O’Shea, Centrica chief executive.
