Pope Francis “rested well” at his Rome hospital overnight and woke up just after 8 am, according to the morning medical bulletin released by the Vatican.

The bulletin did not contain any further information on the pontiff, who has been hospitalised since 14 February with pneumonia in both lungs.

Concerns about the pope’s health have grown during his long hospital stay. On Monday, the pope suffered two episodes of respiratory failure and began using an oxygen mask and a non-invasive ventilator to assist his breathing.

It marked the second time mechanical intervention has been used, with Francis spending two days using a ventilator following a separate breathing crisis on Friday.

On Tuesday evening, the Vatican said Pope Francis had switched back to high-flow oxygen therapy. It added that he alternated between prayer and rest.

The pontiff has been unable to deliver the traditional Angelus prayer in person on the last three Sundays.

He is also set to miss the start of Lent, a major Catholic religious six-week observance leading to Easter, typically marked by a procession and Mass.

His hospital stay is the longest in his 12-year-papacy. The pope was first treated for bronchitis before he was diagnosed with double pneumonia.

Pope Francis has suffered from lung-related issues for much of his life after having part of one lung removed as a young man.

The Holy See has said throughout his hospital stay that the pope’s condition is “guarded” even when stable — meaning that doctors are cautious, and the pope is not yet out of danger.
