The 2021 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations continued on Monday, with Group B and Group C both getting underway on day two of the tournament.
Senegal, Ghana, Morocco and Gabon were among those in action across the day’s four games.
Here’s a look at how things went down…
Tournament favourites Senegal were forced to wait until the 97th minute for the breakthrough against a Zimbabwe side more than 100 places below them in the FIFA rankings.
It was a penalty from Liverpool star Sadio Mane that ultimately made the narrow difference.
Senegal had earlier missed a host of chances, having peppered the Zimbabwe goal with attempts but largely failing to test goalkeeper Petros Mhari.
Elsewhere in Group B, Guinea also marked their first game of the tournament with a 1-0 win.
Issiaga Sylla, who plays his club football in Ligue 2 for Toulouse scored the game’s only goal midway through the first half, to which Malawi had no response.
Guinea face Senegal next up and will be hoping for a positive result that would seal their early qualification to the knockouts after seeing the Lions of Teranga surprisingly struggle.
Morocco took maximum points in the contest between the two big guns in Group C, although it was only decided in the closing stages by ex-Southampton winger Sofiane Boufal.
The victors will see this as a statement win and an important clean sheet.
Ghana, meanwhile, are unlikely to be too disappointed. Qualification to the next round is still firmly in their own hands with their two most favourable group games still to come.
Even without star name and captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabon had enough about them to see off Comoros, who were competing in their first ever major tournament game.
A 16th minute goal from Al-Arabi forward Aaron Boupendza and a clean sheet for Gabon ensured it was the fourth AFCON game of the day to finish with a 1-0 score-line, and the fifth in a row overall including Sunday night’s Group A victory for Cape Verde over Ethiopia.
Only Ethiopia were ranked lower than Comoros coming into the tournament.
