AMERICAN THEATRE | Editor/Publisher Nicole Hertvik Steps Down From DC Theater Arts

Nicole Hertvik

WASHINGTON, D.C.: DC Theater Arts (DCTA) announced that their editor-in-chief and publisher, Nicole Hertvik, is stepping down on Dec. 31 after seven years in these roles. DC Theater Arts is Washington, D.C.’s only nonprofit media outlet dedicated to comprehensive coverage of the theatre community. Last year they published more than 700 reviews, interviews, and news stories, many of them focused on the region’s smaller theatres.

In addition to publishing and editing DC Theater Arts, Hertvik is a contributing writer to several publications in the D.C. region and beyond, including American Theatre. Nicole studied international affairs at Columbia University and journalism at Georgetown University. She was a 2019 National Critics Institute fellow at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center and a 2022 Entrepreneurial Journalism fellow at CUNY. Her reporting for DC Theater Arts was a 2023 finalist in the Society of Professional Journalists Best of DC Dateline Awards.

DCTA was founded by Joel Markowitz in 2012. Following his death in 2017, Hertvik stepped in as the editor-in-chief and publisher. In 2022, she led the organization to re-incorporate as a nonprofit. In 2023, Washington City Paper voters named DCTA the D.C. region’s Best Arts Nonprofit, and their coverage of the COVID epidemic’s impact on the local theatre community was recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists in the category of outstanding online beat reporting.

The board, staff, and advisory board are exploring options to keep the site going after Hertvik’s departure.
