RICHMOND, VA.: Virginia Repertory Theatre has named Klaus Peter Schuller their new managing director. Schuller will begin his tenure on Aug. 1.

“We are beyond thrilled to welcome Klaus to Richmond and honored to appoint him as our managing director,” Virginia Rep’s board chair Martha Quinn said in a statement. “His experience and reputation for creating collaborative arts venues and engaging the communities in which he’s lived align perfectly with our vision for Virginia Rep.”

Schuller served as executive director and producer of Randolph Entertainment from 2018 to 2023. He also previously served as executive director and producer for the Second City Canada in Toronto. Schuller has more than 20 years of experience in live, touring, and televised events production.

“Virginia Rep’s exceptional reputation and the diversity and quality of its offerings immediately appealed to me,” Schuller said in a statement. “I am humbled to have the opportunity to contribute to the incredible legacy the organization has built and its impact on the arts community in Central Virginia and beyond.”

Schuller replaces co-founding managing director Phil Whiteway, who left the organization last summer after the theatre’s board of directors voted to remove him. Amy Wratchford is currently served as interim managing director. Virginia Rep has also announced that they will return to a shared executive leadership model. Former artistic director of programming Rick Hammerly has been promoted to artistic director, and will lead alongside Schuller. The position of artistic director for community, formerly filled by Desirée Roots, has been dissolved.

Virginia Repertory Theatre is a regional professional theatre company headquartered in downtown Richmond and is one of the largest performing arts organizations in Central Virginia. Virginia Rep seeks to entertain, challenge, and uplift its communities through the power of live theatre. As of 2022, Virginia Repertory Theatre had an approximate budget of $4.6 million.
