American Theatre is proud to be the venue for Theatrical Mustang, an independently produced podcast from actor-writer-activist Woodzick. Each month they bring listeners interviews with unbridled talent and cultural trailblazers from across the country.

On this month’s episode, Woodzick chats with Denver-based actor, director, and cabaret artist Bobby Bennett. Since appearing on American Idol, Bobby has performed and produced over 30 cabarets. The conversation digs into the influence of movie musicals, an exploration of Lily Tomlin’s career, a discussion of LGTBQ+ themed ensemble dramas, and considers how we can interrogate theatre classics for a modern audience.

National audiences may remember Bobby Bennett as a top 24 finalist on season five of American Idol where he made his national TV debut. 2024 marks his 31st year in show business. His most recent accolades have taken place over the last decade of his career in the Denver music, theatre, and film community. Critically acclaimed for his work in Matthew Lopez’s The Inheritance at Vintage Theatre, Bennett is also a TrueWest and OSCA award winner, and a Henry Award nominee for Topher Payne’s You Enjoy Myself at Local Theater Company and The Boys in The Band at Vintage Theatre. His 2021 cabaret, “Bennett Sings Bennett,” set audience attendance records. He’s been acting and singing since he was 7 and recently made his directorial debut collaborating on Driving Miss Daisy starring Denver legend Deborah Persoff. He graduated from Metropolitan State University of Denver with honors and a degree in communication with a concentration in broadcasting and a theatre minor. He is currently an associate producer on the nationally televised, “Daily Blast Live.” His next role will be as Bernard in the Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company’s world premiere production of The Ballot of Paola Aguilar this fall.
