“Even on New Year’s Eve, Russia cared only about causing pain to Ukraine,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Kyiv’s city administration said on Wednesday that two people were found dead in the rubble of a building following a Russian morning attack in the Ukrainian capital.
Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office said at least seven other people were injured, including two pregnant women.
Debris from a downed drone caused a fire on the roof of one of the National Bank of Ukraine’s buildings in the city’s Pecherskyi district, the bank reported on Telegram. Windows on the upper floors were damaged, the statement said.
The bank confirmed that all operational systems and services continue to function fully without any disruptions.
“Even on New Year’s Eve, Russia cared only about causing pain to Ukraine. 111 attack drones were launched against our cities,” Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram.
“Thanks to our air defence systems, mobile fire groups, and electronic warfare systems, most of them failed to reach their targets. However, sadly, one person has been reported killed. My condolences to their family and loved ones,” Zelenskyy wrote.
Russia has not slowed down its attacks on Ukraine over the holiday period, with Zelenskyy saying Moscow had escalated its aerial assaults on Ukraine.
On Christmas Day, Russia conducted a large-scale Christmas attack on Ukraine, reportedly firing 78 missiles and 106 drones against multiple cities.
Zelensky vowed in a New Year’s message that he would do “everything possible to bring the war to an end over the next 12 months”.
