Bilingual billboards call Trump 'anti-unionist' in DNC Labor Day campaign

Bilingual billboards in English and Spanish calling former President Donald Trump an “anti-unionist” went up on Labor Day in high-traffic areas in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

The Democratic National Committee, which released the billboards, said in a news release provided first to NBC News: “We have unions to thank for gains in fair wages, worker protections, and health care.”

The release praised Vice President Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a former union member, saying they “know that workers are the engine powering this country, and that’s why they have always had their backs.”

DNC spokesperson Maddy Mundy criticized Trump as a “union buster who sought to withhold pay from union workers” and weakened unions as president “to fatten the pockets of multi-billionaire executives who donate to his campaign.”

“Simply put: Trump is a union scab,” Mundy stated.

The billboards, which read “anti-sindicalista” (anti-unionist) in large letters, come as both parties focus on battleground states and as Harris is tightening her race with Trump, according to polls.

The Biden-Harris administration has boosted organized labor. President Joe Biden made history in 2023 when he became the first president to visit a picket line of striking autoworkers who were demanding higher wages and protesting against cost-of-living increases.

In 2020, Biden won labor households by a 16-point margin over Trump, and Harris has the support of the AFL-CIO and other big unions.

But Trump also has garnered the backing of some of the nation’s 14 million union members who say his support for corporations strengthens the economy and improves their wages.

The percentage of Latino workers nationally who are members of a union is 9%, compared to 9.8% for whites and 11.8% for Blacks.
