BMX racing will return to the Summer Olympic Games for a fifth time this year in Paris.
The sport made its Olympic debut at the 2008 Beijing Games and has been a part of each iteration of the Summer Games since. The high-speed sprint racing event features eight competitors for each sex and is a separate category from the BMX freestyle event – in which competitors are scored for tricks in an urban park – that made its Olympics debut at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
Dutch cyclist Niek Kimmann won the gold medal at the last Summer Games and at the 2021 BMX World Championships. He is among favorites to win the men’s field. On the women’s side, British cyclist Beth Shriever is a favorite after winning the gold at the 2020 Games and at the BMX World Championships in 2021 and 2023.
