For the first time ever, the Summer Olympics will feature competitive dancing.
Breakdancing, or breaking, is one of three additional sports announced for the 2024 Paris Games along with sport climbing and surfing. The latter two made their debuts in the 2020 Games.
Sixteen men and sixteen women will compete for their respective gold medals in the inaugural edition of Olympic breaking. Each of the competitions are a one-day tournament that begins with round-robin competitions before quarterfinal and semifinal stages that lead into the medal events. The contests in the tournament are head-to-head single battles determined by points and rounds scored by judges.
American B-Boy Victor Montalvo won the 2023 World Championships and is one of the favorites to win a medal at the Olympics in Paris later this summer. American B-Girl Sunny Choi has also qualified for the Olympics by winning the 2023 Pan American Games.
