Breaking debuts, while changes coming to other sports for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games

More than 100,000 international athletes are set to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, and while viewers are probably aware of the Olympics’ basketball and wrestling teams and competitions, breaking will makes its olympic debut, while there are changes to other sports as well.

What are the new sports in the 2024 Paris Olympics?

Breaking, (or better known as breakdancing) is making its debut at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

U.S. breakdancer Logan Edra performs a sequence of dance moves as she teaches a breakdancing class at Playground LA in Los Angeles on June 11, 2024.

“The breaking competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games comprises two events where 16 B-Boys and 16 B-Girls will face off in spectacular solo battles,” read Olympics.com’s writeup of the breaking competition. “Athletes will use a combination of power moves — including windmills, the 6-step, and freezes — as they adapt their style and improvise to the beat of the DJ’s tracks in a bid to secure the judges’ votes and take home the first Olympic breaking medals.”

Skateboarding retuning for 2024 Paris Olympics

Skateboarding has risen in popularity, particularly through the sport’s relationship with the X Games, and is set to return for the 2024 Paris Olympics after debuting at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Skateboarders will compete in the park and street disciplines.

“The park competition takes place on a varied course combining bowls and numerous bends, which the athletes use to gather speed and perform tricks mid-air,” read Olympics.com’s description of the skateboard entry. “Street events take place on a straight ‘street-like’ course with stairs, handrails, etc. set up to resemble the urban environments where skateboarding started out.”

Sports climbing has a new format for the 2024 Paris Olympics

The sports climbing event will feature twice as many medaling events than what the sport had when it debuted at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

“At the Paris Games, the number of athletes will climb from 40 to 68, and the competition has been split into two events,” read NBC’s guide on new events for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. “In Tokyo, only a single ‘combined’ medal for each gender was handed out, but the Paris Games will feature a bouldering and lead combined event in addition to a speed event.

“The combined event favors technique over speed, and athletes earn points for various climbing moves.”

Surfing at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, but just not in Paris

Surfing will be a medaling sport at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, but contestants won’t be competing anywhere near Paris.

They will instead, according to NBC’s official 2024 Paris Olympic Games website, compete in Teahupo’o, located roughly 9,000 miles from Paris on the island of Tahiti.

Surfers will compete using shortboards, notes Olympics.com.

“Surfers perform maneuvers and tricks on a wave that are scored by five judges based on the variety, type and difficulty of the tricks,” read Olympics.com’s description of the surfing event. “Surfers are also judged on their speed, power and flow.”

What else is new at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games?

Several sports will unveil new changes to their respective competitions, according to NBC’s official 2024 Paris Olympic Games website.

Artistic swimming, boxing, sailing, shooting, track and field, volleyball and weightlifting have changed formats and disciplines for the Paris Olympics.
