Well guys a few points for discussion. What’s our best formation? in Europe we have set up with 4-2-3-1. In the league we mix it up with also deploying 4-3-3.
Rangers v Lyon didn’t end up the way I thought it would on Thursday night. I look back at our chances missed early on, which could have made a huge difference. Being more clinical in front of goal with players keeping their cool before hitting a shot or not hitting a shot when the space opens up and looking for the extra pass.
Bajarami stands out from the rest at this moment. Even wee Connor had an off night, but still ran himself into the ground. We really cry out for a Ryan Jack or remember Tugay sweeping up at the back and filling in the gaps? We also miss a CB like Amouruso, Butcher, Gough or even Boumsong. Guys who knew how to defend and tackle.
Too many times our defence finds itself out of position or switching off. Players not tracking the runner and ball watching. James Tavernier (Tav) jogging back is just embarrassing from a Rangers captain who already has had a mouthful from fans. Tav has aged unfortunately, so did Lundstrum and other various scenarios crept in; contracts and money etc.
Could we not go back to trying a flexible 4-4-2 and Dessers getting more help up front instead of him trying for fouls every second, which is becoming painful and cringy to watch at times.
We talk about money spent and the lack of it. Can anyone tell me how much our midfield was worth who mostly played in the run to the Europa final? Players like Kamarra, Lundstrum, Jack and Aribo?
With the correct scouting, we can find players that can make a difference for little outlay as we have done it before. In fact a few times did we not deploy a 5-4-1, thinking of the Leipzig game. Possibly might have been a good tactic on Thursday night?
Looking back at that European run and how we set up our stall and played, I must confess now that was a stronger squad. Players then a little younger and played very good football throughout that tournament and they put everything into it.
How do we build a team for little outlay that will put everything into it? Does Philippe Clement (PC) have the correct man to man management style and will players run through walls for him?
We won’t ever be able to bring the players Dick Advocaat brought to the club, but look at GVB and what we managed to do and who we faced and beat in that European run.
I do wonder if we left GVB in charge and had his own rebuild and was backed what would have happened? Where would we be now? Hindsight is a wonderful thing. For one we wouldn’t have given Michael Beale all that cash to spend.
I’m not convinced by PC, players don’t look greatly motivated and don’t look like they are afraid of their manager. There’s a poll currently on the Rangers Rumours page on whether PC will be here next year. Why did we extend his contract and how much would it cost the club to let him go? that might just be our biggest mistake.
Or maybe PC gets another couple of windows with more backing and we get rid of players like Dowell, Tav and Matondo etc. and bringing a few more in. Can PC turn us into a side who can compete on all fronts? I think the jury is still out. Bringing Dowell on the other night just left me frustrated and bewildered!
Lack of efficiency in front of goal is costing us as much as Dessers scores. It’s the big games the ones we need him to step up in, I feel he falls down. Cerny I’m very glad we can off load after his loan. He’s not good enough and dare I say it, Kent was a better player. 🙈
Still think the overall squad from back to front are not all playing as a unit. What’s the word the cohesion of the squad or lack of it at times is concerning. I don’t have the answers, but I said I worry about the Manchester United and Tottenham games as I think we’re in trouble and could be embarrassed like nothing we have seen before.
I don’t think our defence is up to it or our midfield for that matter and if we can’t be clinical in games, then what chance do we have? PC needs to find a system and a setup that suits the players we have and stick to it. A lot of work in the training ground needs done. Does PC have it in him? and do half the players? Time will tell I suppose 🙈.
