Diving format & rules for Paris Olympics
At the Olympics, diving is contested on the flexible 3m springboard and the rigid 10m platform.
In each category there are men’s and women’s individual events, plus the synchronised events first introduced in 2000 in Sydney, in which the divers compete in pairs.
All of the competitions are scored by a panel of judges who base their score on various criteria, including the aesthetics of the dive and how well the diver enters the water.
The divers must submit a difficulty rating for each dive before the competition and their judges’ score is multiplied by the difficulty to get a final total.
Synchronised events are also judged on how in sync the pairing is.
Each dive performed by an athlete must be from a different group – forward, backward, reverse, inward, twisting and, for 10m only, armstand.
Men dive six times and women five, with the highest cumulative score determining the winner.
In the individual events, divers must come through the preliminary stage and semi-final to secure one of 12 spots in the final.
The four synchronised events progress straight to the final stage with eight pairs competing in each.
Is Tom Daley competing at the Olympics?
Yes, he is.
Daley first competed at an Olympics as a 14-year-old in 2008 in Beijing.
Having won bronze medals at London 2012 and in Rio de Janeiro four years later, he won his first Olympic gold at the last Games in Tokyo in the 10m platform synchronised event with partner Matty Lee.
After that Daley, who now lives in the United States, took two years away from the sport and was widely expected to retire.
But he has returned after his son Robbie told him he wanted to see his father compete at an Olympics.
Daley will defend his 10m syncro title alongside Noah Williams.
Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix, the daughter of TV presenter Fred Sirieix, is another member of the British team.
Team GB have not won a female diving medal since 1960.
Can anyone stop China?
Diving is a sport China has dominated at the Olympics in recent years.
The gold won by Daley and Lee in Tokyo was the only one not won by the Chinese at those Games.
Of the 32 golds available since the Olympics in 2008, China have won 27 in a remarkable period of success.
At the World Championships in Doha earlier this year, China won all eight of the events that will be competed in Paris.
