The Seattle Seahawks are already down a longtime member of the wide receiver corps with Wednesday’s release of Tyler Lockett.
Another may be on the move. Per NFL Network, DK Metcalf has requested a trade, and the Seahawks are considering granting it.
Metcalf, 27, is a two-time Pro Bowler and former second-round pick who’s played his entire six-season career with the Seahawks. It’s not clear from the report what prompted his request.
Metcalf took a secondary role last season to second-year receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who emerged as Seattle’s No. 1 receiving option. He still remained a key contributor to Seattle’s offense.
After consecutive seasons with 1,000-plus yards including his 2023 Pro Bowl campaign (66 catches, 1,114 yards, eight touchdowns), Metcalf tallied 66 catches for 992 yards and five touchdowns in 2024.
Smith-Njigba, a first-round pick in 2023, led Seattle last season with 100 catches for 1,130 yards and six touchdowns. He was the target of 137 passes, compared to 108 for Metcalf.
If the Seahawks end up trading Metcalf without a corresponding acquisition, they’ll suddenly be thin a position that was previously a strength. Just before news of Metcalf’s trade request broke, Seattle released Lockett, who’s played his entire 10-season career in Seattle.
Lockett, 32, is a former All-Pro and Pro Bowler and remained a productive member of Seattle’s passing game in 2024. He caught 49 passes for 600 yards and two touchdowns last season as Seattle’s third-leading receiver behind Smith-Njigba and Metcalf. Seattle’s next-leading wide receiver was Jake Bobo, who caught 13 passes for 107 yards and one touchdown.
Any move to trade Metcalf would presumably need to come with a plan to acquire another starting-caliber receiver through free agency, trade or via the draft. Davante Adams, Chris Godwin, Amari Cooper and Stefon Diggs are among the top wide receivers expected to be available in free agency.
An athletic, 6-4 playmaker still in his prime, Metcalf would be a coveted target for receiver-needy teams if the Seahawks do move forward with his request.
