With eight straight wins to begin the 2025 season (including two wins over the Chicago Cubs in Japan), the Los Angeles Dodgers now own the best start by a defending World Series champion in MLB history. That shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering the Dodgers only got better in the offseason.
But after Wednesday night’s thrilling Shohei Ohtani walk-off win, Los Angeles hit a roadblock in Philadelphia. In the first game of a six-game East Coast road trip, Jesús Luzardo mowed down the Dodgers offense in a 3-2 Phillies win.

The Modern Era record of 13 straight wins to start a season, which was tied by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2023, is safe, at least for this season.
