Donald Trump has been projected to win the state of Georgia, handing him a major victory in his effort to recapture the White House and dramatically narrowing Kamala Harris’ path to victory.

The state was called for the former president after Harris fell short in the neighbouring swing state of North Carolina, and as she struggled to make up margins against Trump in the other swing states that have dominated the campaign.

Georgia was one of the hardest-fought states in the 2020 election, in the end voting for Joe Biden—the first time the state had backed a Democrat since the 1990s. Biden won it by 0.23% of the vote, and Trump and his allies made a concerted effort to overturn the result.

This included the former president personally pressurising Republican state officials to “find” enough votes to overturn Biden’s victory, but they refused to comply.

Trump and several of his associates are now facing a criminal indictment in the state’s Fulton County over the attempt to change the result.

Kamala Harris campaigned heavily in Georgia thoughout her three-month stint as the Democratic nominee, holding packed rallies there as late as a few days before election day.

Reports of record high early voting boosted her campaign’s hopes of keeping the state in the Democratic column, but it was not to be.
