It would be easy to write an expletive-laden rant after watching Rangers yesterday, but I don’t think it would do anyone any good and provide ammunition for our phonetically challenged friends over in the East. I think that any talk about any changing the manager misses the point.
This blue-nose who grew up with the riches of Gazza and Laudrup – which I think is why the last few years have been difficult for this mid-50s man to accept with today having an air of inevitability about it with the usual patterns of play and culprits to blame.
The seeds of yesterday’s defeat were sown by the Board when we didn’t back Gerrard and then gave a relative novice £18 million to spend last summer. Then subsequently, when we didn’t strengthen in January when we needed firepower and ceded the league to Celtic.
However, that’s the past, and there’s nothing that can be done about it. I think what is more productive is to ask what success looks like this season – and, as a club, whether we are heading in the right direction.
I think we need to be honest as a fan base and accept that this is a transitional year. Although miracles are possible, it would take a brave man to bet their house on us to win the league this year.
With our squad this year and Celtic’s resources, it is highly unlikely that we can meaningfully challenge. I know many of you will criticize me for being defeatist, and I hope that you are right and I am wrong. But we are all Rangers fans, so remember that we want the same thing. We want success and to reclaim our place as the #1 Football Club in Scotland.
I know this is difficult to come to terms with, gut-wrenching and humiliating. But if we’re going to go through this pain of being second again, then what is the plan for next year. What will more resources and two transfer windows bring?
Let’s have the Manager and the Chairman have an honest conversation with fan media in a series of sit-downs with us about how we get back to where we want to go rather than Rangers supporters saying let’s sack Clement.
Sure, there are still players that need to be moved on, which was evident yesterday, and big Dessers reverted to type as well. But seriously, how will we get ourselves into a position to mount a serious challenge for the title this year or next?
Who and what is needed? What style are we developing, and how can the Board and communicate this to the fans in a way that allows us to support the project moving forward rather than descend into the usual rant about how poor we were – as much as I want to!
