Goliath and jockey Christophe Soumillon caused an upset with victory in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.
Blue Stocking came second and Rebel’s Romance claimed third with favourite Auguste Rodin finishing fifth.
Goliath, who had odds of 25-1, is the first French-trained winner of the Group One race since 2006.
“I love winning like this,” trainer Francis-Henri Graffard told ITV. “I know my horse has good pace. We came here to Ascot to find some pace. He travelled so nicely.”
Belgian jockey Soumillon and Goliath had been towards the back of the group before the final turn when he raced clear.
It is the second time Soumillon has won the Group 1 race after victory in 2006 aboard Hurricane Run, owned by Andre Fabre.
Trainer Aidan O’Brien had three horses in the race – Auguste Rodin, Luxembourg and Hans Andersen – but they finished fifth, sixth and ninth respectively.
