Insomniac Games is aggressively teasing something to do with Sunset Overdrive, possibly suggesting a sequel or remaster for PlayStation 5.
Insomniac Games appears to be teasing something new for its beloved Xbox exclusive, Sunset Overdrive. It all started via a hidden Easter egg in the latest Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart trailer, which takes fans through the history of the series across the many generations of PlayStation. The teases have continued with new Sunset Overdrive-related tweets leading in to the release of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
Sunset Overdrive was a fan-favorite Xbox exclusive that came just a year after the launch of the Xbox One. It was a noteworthy title, as Insomniac had largely made PlayStation games in the years prior. Still, the developer wasn’t owned by either of the two platform holders. Despite being loved by fans, a sequel never came and Insomniac moved on. That said, now that the company is owned by PlayStation, a Sunset Overdrive sequel is a possibility.
Although it was an Xbox game, PlayStation acquired the rights to the franchise after buying Insomniac, and it seems there may be some plans to move forward with it. Eagle eyed fan Joey Parabellum noted that there was a hidden plushy of Fizzie, the mascot from Sunset Overdrive, in the latest Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart trailer, which released last week. Insomniac then began making references to the game on its official account, and long dormant Sunset Overdrive accounts also began tweeting. Of course, it could just be a simple cross-promotional stunt, as other PlayStation franchises are being referenced by Insomniac, but given the studio has plenty of other IPs it could’ve chosen, it’s a rather interesting pick.
What the heck. Did anybody hear that?

There have been plenty of small hints at a Sunset Overdrive resurgence at PlayStation in the last few months, so it’s looking more and more likely that something is in fact coming. Of course, it really could be a way of marketing Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and nothing else, but this seems unlikely. Spider-Man is far more well-known than Sunset Overdrive, so a cross-promotional marketing scheme would make more sense for the Marvel hero than a cult-classic game that found its fanbase on another console entirely.
There’s a lot of seeds being planted, and perhaps it’s just a remaster, but bringing the game to PlayStation 4 and 5 would be really exciting. It could also open doors to a potential sequel if it performs well financially, which isn’t out of the question given Insomniac’s explosive growth in the industry as a marquee studio. Will a Sunset Overdrive sequel happen after Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart releases? It’s hard to say, as the studio is likely working on a Spider-Man sequel, but the franchise clearly hasn’t been forgotten.
