Home owned by late TV anchor Floyd Kalber sells for $1.7M

The four-bedroom, 3,079-square-foot Tudor-style home in Burr Ridge that the late Chicago TV anchor Floyd Kalber and his wife, Betty, owned sold on April 1 for $1.7 million.

Nicknamed “The Big Tuna,” Kalber was a news anchor for WMAQ-Channel 5 and then for NBC’s “Today” show before returning to Chicago and taking a job as the 6 p.m. news anchor for WLS-Channel 7. He retired from Channel 7 in 1998 and died in his Burr Ridge home in 2004 at age 79.

In Burr Ridge, Kalber and his wife, Betty, paid $600,000 in 1989 for the one-story, Tudor-style house. Built in 1981, the house has 4-1/2 bathrooms and two fireplaces and sits on a 0.4-acre lot.

Listing agent Beth Burtt of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate represented both Kalber’s widow and the buyer in the transaction. Burtt told Elite Street that Betty Kalber sold the home because she is moving into her daughter’s home.

Located in the gated Burr Ridge Club, the home sold before it was placed publicly for sale, Burtt said.

“The Burr Ridge Club is very desirable. What made this house special was that it’s a one-story home that sits on a great lot with beautiful water views,” Burtt said. “It’s the perfect home for buyers to want to buy and to update to their liking. I could have sold it many times over.”

The house had a $17,029 property tax bill in the 2022 tax year.  It also has quarterly homeowners association fees of $4,350.
