It took a photo finish to confirm it, but Noah Lyles is officially the fastest man in the world.
The American runner is halfway to the sprint double at the 2024 Paris Olympics after winning the gold medal in the 100-meter sprint on Sunday. He finished just 0.005 seconds ahead of Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson to secure his first Olympic gold medal. It’s also the first win by an American at the event since Justin Gatlin won at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

The harder part is now over for Lyles, who is a three-time world champion in the 200-meter sprint. He will begin his quest for the second half of the double on Monday.
Despite his three gold medals at world championships, the 27-year-old is still seeking his first Olympic gold in the 200-meter. Lyles won the bronze in the event at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
