Just a few days after struggling with an illness that caused her to stumble in the floor exercise, Jade Carey of Phoenix is a gold medal winner at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Carey and her teammates, led by U.S. star Simone Biles, won the artistic gymnastics team final on Tuesday with a final score of 171.296.
Carey, who competes at Oregon State University, did her part for the team in the vault, with a score of 14.800, which was second on the team behind Biles’ 14.900.
Carey, who attended Mountain Ridge High School, will compete in the individual vault finals scheduled for Saturday at 7:20 a.m. Arizona time (10:20 AM ET) on NBC, Peacock and NBCOlympics.com.
Carey, 24, was the defending Olympic individual floor exercise gold medalist, which she won in 2021 at the Tokyo Olympic games. But on Sunday, she failed to advance to the individual finals in that event, after struggling in the floor exercise but advanced to the individual vault final with the third-highest score behind Biles and Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade. Carey was the 2022 world champion in the vault.
The next day, she said she had been feeling ill and unable to eat, but she and her mother both said Carey was feeling better by Monday.
