Jets reportedly hiring Broncos assistant GM Darren Mougey as new general manager

The New York Jets have already found their new head coach in Aaron Glenn. Now, the team has found its new general manager, reportedly hiring Denver Broncos assistant GM Darren Mougey.

Mougey, 39, has spent more than a decade with Denver in a variety of roles, starting as a scouting intern in 2012. He was promoted to assistant GM in 2022.

After a tumultuous 2022 season under Nathaniel Hackett, the Broncos have bounced back in two seasons under Sean Payton, making the playoffs this season for the first time since winning the Super Bowl in 2015. Denver’s general management team, including Mougey, had a big year, drafting quarterback Bo Nix as a potential franchise QB and building a playoff contender without an expensive roster.

Mougey replaces former Jets GM Joe Douglas, who was fired by owner Woody Johnson in November after leading the team to a 30-64 record across five seasons.

With the Jets getting a fresh start at the top, Glenn and Mougey will now work together to help bring life back into the organization. The new head coach-GM team will also dictate what happens with Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has said that his future with the team will depend on who takes over in those roles.

The Jets hold the longest active playoff drought in American professional sports, having last made the postseason in 2010, and haven’t had a winning season since 2015. Glenn and Mougey will hope to change that starting next season.
