José Mourinho targeting Tottenham midfielder for AS Roma reunion

José Mourinho eyeing former midfielder Tanguy Ndombélé as Tottenham stint all but over

Mourinho eyeing January move for Ndombélé

AS Roma boss Josê Mourinho could be looking to do Tottenham a bit of a favor this month after the former Spurs boss has been linked with interest in French international midfielder Tanguy Ndombélé.

The Olympique Lyonnais academy graduate has failed to truly make his mark at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since his arrival in the summer of 2019 under then-manager Mauricio Pochettino but evolved into a key asset under Mourinho once he returned to full fitness during the 2020-21 campaign, making 33-appearances in the Premier League (28 starts) under the iconic Portuguese manager with a combined 47-outings across all competitions.

But since Mourinho’s sacking, Ndombélé has not cemented his place under either Nuno Espírito Santo or Antonio Conte and now looks set to seek a future away from north London with Roma providing the possible escape route according to Football Italia.

Citing a report in Corriere dello Sport which references French outlet Telefoot, Roma could look offer a loan with an obligation to buy next summer given Spurs’ current valuation of ~£25million, but also mention the possibility of structuring any deal in a similar vein that saw them capture Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham in the summer with payments deferred over multiple seasons.

Mourinho reportedly spoke to Ndombélé personally in an effort to convince him to join him in the eternal city at the Stadio Olimpico despite the I Giallorossi currently boasting eight central-midfielders in the first-team setup.

Tottenham in midst of a busy January

Should AS Roma secure a deal for Tanguy Ndombélé, the French international will likely not be the only player to come in or out of the door at Tottenham in January after Spurs remain heavily linked with winter window business.

The club received a recent bid from Dutch giants Ajax for Steven Bergwijn in the wake of the club offloading Brazilian winger David Neres to Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk.

Tottenham will be hoping to replace the Dutch international before allowing him to head back home according to the London Evening Standard as well as hoping for an improved offer from the Eredivisie outfit, however, and fresh interest in Manchester United castaway Jesse Lingard could be a lynchpin for both deals getting over the line before the window closes.

Club director Fabio Paratici also continues to harbor an interest in Wolves winger Adama Traoré that carried over during his time with Juventus but could be made to slug it out with Spanish juggernaut Barcelona who are monitoring the former La Masia graduate with the view of bringing him home to add to the squad overhaul that is being undertaken since the return of Xavi to Catalunya.
