From reality TV stars to volleyball champs, Euronews presents the 27 senior officials likely to lead the EU executive for the next five years.
Ursula von der Leyen has been re-elected for a second term in office as President of the European Commission – but what do we know about the 26 lieutenants who’ll serve under her?
EU member states have been given until 30 August to say who they want to propose as Commissioner.
Not everyone has yet done so – and political turmoil in Belgium and Bulgaria means a likely delay. Von der Leyen may push back on some of the male choices, given that she wants to achieve gender balance.
Once the final roster is known in mid-September, they’ll be assigned portfolios and submit themselves for confirmation from the European Parliament.
That might prove tricky – not least those who don’t seem to have much experience (waves at Malta’s 35-year-old Glenn Micaleff), or still worse for those previously caught calling MEPs “idiots.” (Take a bow, Hungary’s Olivér Várhelyi).
But those who do make it through will be in charge of some major issues, from protecting the environment to supporting Ukraine.
From lawyers to linguists, reality TV stars to volleyball champs, we look behind the CVs at the personalities who could shape EU politics in the five years to come. Click on the candidates to find more about them:
