NFL news, injury updates: Brock Purdy leaves 49ers practice, Jets fire GM Joe Douglas

The New York Jets are cleaning house, with GM Joe Douglas getting the boot exactly six weeks after the team fired head coach Robert Saleh. Since then, the Jets have won just one of their last six games since Jeff Ulbrich took over head coaching duties. Douglas’ contract was set to expire after this season; he compiled a 30-64 record as general manager.

Elsewhere in the NFL, while the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Chargers inched closer to solidifying their spots in the AFC playoff picture, the Jacksonville Jaguars moved closer to the top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after a 52-6 beatdown at the hands of the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Doug Pederson led the Jaguars to middling 9-8 records in each of the past two seasons, even making the playoffs and winning a game in 2022, but an awful start to the year could mean his job is in jeopardy. Meanwhile, Nick Bosa left the 49ers’ heartbreaking loss to the Seahawks, and it wasn’t a re-aggravation of a hip injury that had him on the injury report heading into Week 11.

But first, let’s talk some Dallas Cowboys, who not only got pasted by the Houston Texans on Monday night, but haven’t won at home in a shockingly long time.

The Cowboys got demolished by the Houston Texas on Monday Night Football, losing 34-10 at home at AT&T Stadium. Dallas is now 3-7, with all three of their wins coming on the road. They and the struggling New York Giants are the only teams without a home win this season. But if you pull the camera back a bit, things look even worse for the Cowboys. The Giants’ last home win was on Jan. 7, 2024, but the Cowboys haven’t won a home game since Dec. 30, 2023.

That means the Cowboys are the only team in all four major North American pro sports leagues without a home win in the year 2024. Even the Philadelphia 76ers and Washington Wizards, who are tied for the NBA’s worst record at 2-11, each have a home win.

With four of their seven remaining games at home, the Cowboys have a decent chance at securing a home stadium win before the season is over. But we’ve seen the 2024 Cowboys play. It’s possible they go the entire 2024 season without a victory at home.

Things aren’t great when you lose a game by 46 points and you’ve got the worst record in the NFL. Doug Pederson’s tenure on Florida’s First Coast has turned sour after a first season that included an AFC South title and designs on shepherding Trevor Lawrence into becoming one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL. Well, at 2-9 and with the Jags having a Week 12 bye, now could be the time to make a change, according to Yahoo Sports’ senior NFL writer Frank Schwab.

“On Saturday, someone leaked to NFL Media that with the Jaguars’ bye week coming up, big changes could be made including firing Pederson. That’s an underhanded way of finding out that keeping your job might depend on winning at Detroit, but at least Pederson knew the stakes. And like just about everything else since that Super Bowl win with the Eagles, Pederson fell short.”

Pederson, who led the Eagles to a Super Bowl championship is just 42-50-1 as a head coach since with that lone 2022 playoff appearance. While the Jaguars didn’t fire Pederson on Monday, stay tuned in Jacksonville.

Just as Christian McCaffrey has returned to the lineup, the snake-bitten 2024 49ers are dealing with another injury to another major star. After Sunday’s loss to the Seahawks, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the oblique injury was a new one, but didn’t offer more on what that would mean for the star pass rusher. Bosa has seven sacks this season, and has posted double-digit sack totals each of the past three years. The 5-5 49ers are tied with the Rams and Seahawks, a game back of the 6-4 Cardinals in the NFC West.

  • Brock Purdy leaves 49ers practice

An unexpected turn of events occurred at 49ers practice on Thursday.

Quarterback Brock Purdy, who was listed on the team’s injury report with a right shoulder issue, came out for practice. But after a few throws on a back field, Purdy had to stop and a trainer attended to his shoulder, as SI.com’s Grant Cohn explained.

Purdy then attempted to warm up with soft throws while San Francisco’s other three quarterbacks went through drills with QB coach Brian Griese. After approximately five minutes, Purdy stopped and then went back to the locker room.

The quarterback was hit on his shoulder during last week’s game versus the Seahawks. He finished the game, though did not make any throws over 10 yards. There was no indication afterward that Purdy was hurt.

If Purdy can’t play on Sunday, Brandon Allen will likely start at quarterback for San Francisco.

Jets WR Davante Adams doesn’t regret trade to Jets

“No, I don’t live my life like that,” Adams told Up and Adams on Wednesday. “You’ll drive yourself crazy. Hindsight’s always 20-20. So you can sit here and look at it right now and say, ‘Oh, I could’ve maybe stayed there, would’ve been more comfortable, wouldn’t have had to move and all that stuff.’ But for me, it’s about going with my gut in my life, and that’s how I make my decisions. I live with them. We’ll roll the dice and see what happens. It’s not really a gamble even in this situation. It’s more of making … it’s almost like an inference. It’s calculated based on growing up, playing with … we’re talking about playing with Aaron Rodgers here, too.

“This isn’t like taking some crazy gamble going somewhere with some rookie that’s unproven. Neither of us have played as good as we’re capable of playing, but when you’re rolling the dice, you’d hope that it’s favoring you more. You got trick dice. It still might not work, but we’re trying and doing everything we can and still going.”

Giants DL Dexter Lawrence backs ‘best friend’ Daniel Jones

Giants defensive lineman said on Tuesday that Daniel Jones is “the best quarterback on the team” during a Campbell’s Soup “Chunky Sacks Hunger” charity event.

Defending his “best friend,” Lawrence, who the Giants selected 11 picks after Jones in the 2019 draft, said that while head coach Brian Daboll’s decision to go to Tommy DeVito under center for this week’s game against the Buccaneers was “hard,” he didn’t agree with it.

“It’s tough for that to happen. I can’t control it,” Lawrence said. “They made the decision based off their evaluations and their thoughts and feelings. … That’s my boy. As a player, you got to keep playing. As a human and as a brother, I feel for him. .. I’m sure it’s hard. He’s the QB1. To me, the best quarterback on the team. But they see things differently. I guess that’s all that matters.”

Bengals HC Zac Taylor doesn’t take issue with Ja’Marr Chase’s postgame comments

When asked after their 34-27 loss to the Chargers about the team’s struggled finishing games, Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase passed on answering and said to ask coach Zac Taylor.

“Ask Zac,” Chase said on Sunday. “Ask the coaches. That’s not my job. I play football on the field. I don’t call plays for us.”

On Tuesday, Taylor was asked about Chase’s comments and said he didn’t have a problem with his star receiver.

“He’s emotional, and when you got a guy that works as hard as he does, leaves it all on the field, I do think things — I don’t want to say ‘misconstrued’ — but can look differently than what they really are,” Taylor said. “… He’s a guy that is one of the most genuine players I’ve ever been around and honest, insightful, puts it all out there for us. I don’t have problems with guys that work as hard as they do, speaking with emotion after the game, speaking with passion.”

Chiefs signing WR Tyquan Thornton to practice squad

The Chiefs continue to bolster their wide receiving corps following injuries to Rashee Rice and Juju Smith-Schuster. Kansas City is signing former Patriots wideout Tyquan Thornton to its practice squad.

Thornton, 24, was waived by New England on Saturday. He was the team’s second-round pick (No. 50 overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft after drawing attention at the scouting combine for running a 4.28 40-yard dash.

This season, Thornton caught four passes for 47 yards. For his career, he’s tallied 39 receptions for 385 yards and two touchdowns in three years with the Patriots.

Nico Collins back for Texans-Cowboys with no restrictions after 5-game absence

Nico Collins led the NFL in receiving when he suffered a hamstring injury in Week 5. On Monday, he’ll return to the Houston Texans lineup against the Dallas Cowboys after missing five straight weeks.

The Texans removed Collins from injured reserve ahead of last week’s game against the Lions, but did not activate him for the game. They then removed his injury status on Saturday ahead of Monday’s game.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Collins will play Monday night without any minutes or snap restrictions.

  • Thanks to ‘The Simpsons’ we’re stuck with Bengals-Cowboys on Week 14 MNF

If you were hoping that the Week 14 Bengals-Cowboys matchup on “Monday Night Football” might be flexed out for a more consequential game, give up that dream now.

Much like last season’s Toy Story game, “The Simpsons Sunday Funday Football” is a alternate broadcast in which “The Simpsons” characters (as well as animated football players) will do exactly what the real football players are doing during the game. And at this point, less than a month from the Dec. 9 game, too much work has been done to make any major changes.

Last year’s edition was a massive hit with kids and adults, and this year ESPN is banking on the eternal appeal of Bart, Homer, Marge, Lisa, Maggie, and the whole gang to bring in viewers.
