The Norwegian Nobel Committee has condemned the decision by an Iranian court to add more than a year to the prison sentenced imposed on 2023 Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi.
“The Norwegian Nobel Committee strongly condemns the harsh and unjust sentencing of Ms. Mohammadi by the Iranian Islamic Republic regime,” wrote the committee in a statement published Thursday.
“This is a flagrant violation of human rights and a travesty of justice,” wrote Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, in the statement.
Mohammadi has been imprisoned since November 2021 in relation to her work against the wearing of mandatory hijab by women.
“Mohammadi was sentenced to one year in prison for propaganda against the system,” said her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, on X Tuesday.
Nili said the latest sentence relates to calls to boycott parliamentary elections, letters to lawmakers in Sweden and Norway, and commentary about student journalist Dina Ghalibaf.
Human rights groups said Ghalibaf was detained after accusing security personnel of sexually assaulting her during a previous arrest. She has been released.
The Iranian judiciary’s Mizan Online website said that Ghalibaf was prosecuted for making a “false statement.”
Mohammadi refused to go to a trial hearing earlier this month. She has shared audio from prison criticizing the Islamic republic for its treatment of women.
She was given the Nobel Peace Prize in October.
