Orioles pitcher Corbin Burnes announced as AL starter for MLB All-Star Game

Any of the starting pitchers on the 2024 American League All-Star Team could have made the big start in the All-Star Game on Tuesday, but only one will get that honor: Corbin Burnes.

Burnes, who plays for the Baltimore Orioles, was announced as the All-Star Game starter on Monday when MLB tweeted out the starting lineups for both leagues.

Burnes, 29, is having a dynamite season for the Orioles. Over 19 starts and 118 2/3 innings he has a 2.43 ERA with 110 strikeouts and a 1.045 WHIP. He’s been the anchor of their rotation, which will become even more important in the second half as everyone battles the injuries and fatigue that come with a 162-game season.

This is Burnes’ fourth consecutive All-Star selection and his first with the Orioles. On the previous three occasions he went as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers, the team that drafted him in the fourth round in 2016 — and traded him to the Orioles on Feb. 1 after six seasons as the standout in their rotation.

While Burnes had been to the All-Star Game three other times as a member of the Brewers, he’s doing something with the Orioles he’s never done before: actually start the All-Star Game.

You’ll be able to see Burnes take the mound Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN, when he’ll face National League starter Paul Skenes.
