After battling all season in the NL West and being two of the best teams in the National League in 2024, it comes down to one game for the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series. Game 5 is set for Friday night at Dodger Stadium, and this series has had a bit of everything, from fans throwing garbage onto the field, to Dave Roberts accusing Manny Machado of throwing a ball at the Los Angeles dugout, to Fernando Tatis Jr. having an incredible series.
The Padres won eight of the 13 regular-season meetings between the teams in 2024, and will send Yu Darvish to the mound against Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Darvish took three turns against the Dodgers in the regular season — he had a 1.72 ERA over 15 2/3 innings with 12 strikeouts and six walks in those games. Darvish also went 7.0 innings and struck out three in San Diego’s 10-2 win in Game 2 of this series. Yamamoto made two starts against the Padres early this season, including the season opener in South Korea, where Yamamoto lasted only one inning. In Game 1 of this series against the Padres, Yamamoto pitched five innings and allowed five runs.
The winner of Friday’s Game 5 hosts the Mets, who topped the Phillies in their NLDS matchup, in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series on Sunday.
