Keely Hodgkinson ran with the weight of Great Britain’s expectations on her shoulders but still emerged Olympic 800m champion at Stade de France, moving up from fifth to first entering the final lap and cruising across the line in 1:56.72.

That was after Great Britain’s women’s sprint team took a sensational gold on the opening night of track cycling in the velodrome, lowering the world record in three successive rounds to get the week off to the perfect start. The GB trio of Katy Marchant, Sophie Capewell and rising star Emma Finucane were simply unstoppable, dominating New Zealand in the final.

At the start of the day, Team GB’s Alex Yee, Georgia Taylor-Brown, Samuel Dickinson and Beth Potter claimed bronze in the mixed relay triathlon. The team thought they had won silver only to see their finish downgraded after a photo finish.

Joe Clarke and Kimberley Woods emerged from kayak cross chaos with silver and bronze medals respectively as the wet and wild, winner-takes-all discipline enjoyed an Olympic debut to remember in front of over 10,000 fans in Vaires-sur-Marne.

Meanwhile, Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix secured her spot in Tuesday’s women’s 10m platform diving final after finishing third in the semi-finals. And Dina Asher-Smith bounced back from 100 metres heartbreak to snap up a place in Tuesday’s 200m final at Stade de France.

There was disappointment for Team GB in the women’s pole vault, however, with a tearful Holly Bradshaw consoled by Molly Caudery after elimination before Caudery was herself eliminated in the biggest track and field shock of the Games. Caudery failed to clear 4.55m in three tries having jumped 4.92m this season.

And Great Britain’s hopes of a hockey medal were ended after the women’s side lost 3-1 to the Netherlands at the quarter-final stage.

Simone Biles failed to add another Olympic gold to her Paris medal collection after she suffered a surprise defeat in the women’s floor exercise final, the American finishing second behind Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade. And there was no medal for Biles on the balance beam this time after she fell off the apparatus. Biles does return to the US with three golds in her possession, having won the all around and vault titles, plus the team competition.

Netherlands win 3-1, Team GB out

At the final whistle, the British players collapse to the ground as the Dutch celebrate wildly. The Dutch move on to a semi final with Argentina. The British women’s hockey team go home. The brutal reality of Olympic competition. 3-1 to the Dutch. Credit to the British, that was closer than anyone would have predicted.

Laura Roper, the Team GB defender, is married to Phil Roper, who was part of the losing men’s quarter final team. Not been a cheery couple of days in the Roper household.

Netherlands make it 3-1

Writing looks to be on the wall for GB hockey women. Here is Jimmy:

The pattern continues as we enter the last quarter. GB have defended doggedly, heroically at times. But they need a goal. And just to add to the challenge, the Dutch have scored again. Could our women come back? Well here’s a stat for you: if the Netherlands win today they will have lost just once in their last 42 Olympic Games matches – the gold medal game against Germany at Athens 2004. Because don’t forget they drew the Rio 2016 final with Great Britain, missing out on gold in a penalty shootout.

05:33 PM BST

No handshakes please, we are Dutch

Odd fact: the entire Dutch Olympic team refuse to shake hands during these Games, insisting instead on the fist bump. It is, apparently, a legacy of covid restrictions that has become something of a superstition.

05:16 PM BST

Hockey half time

GB were within 21 seconds of making it to half time on equal terms when the inevitable happened. In the melee following a short corner, the Dutch scored, when Luna Fokke fired home. GB argued that a foul had been made in the build up to her shot. The on pitch umpire referred it upstairs. But the video umpire saw nothing wrong and the goal stood. In truth nobody could be surprised. The Netherlands, quicker in their passing, sharper in their control, faster in their running, were unquestionably the superior side. But the British women defended doggedly and persuasively. And had been admirably defiant. Until that last moment.

05:12 PM BST

Netherlands 2-1 up at HT in the hockey

I was just about to say that GB are going to go into the interval level but the mighty Dutch side have popped up to score a few seconds before the half-time whistle hooter.  Fokke was the scorer. Well quite.

About ten minutes left in the second period. Here’s Lord Jim:

The Netherlands won five out of five of their group games; GB won two. The Netherlands are unbeaten since they lost to GB in the 2016 Olympic final, winning 96% of their matches. No surprise then that they have taken the lead within 30 seconds, on their first attack. This is going to be a long evening for British supporters.

Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix into women’s 10m platform final

Team GB’s Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix secured her spot in Tuesday’s women’s 10m platform final after finishing third in the semi-finals.

The 19-year-old will be Great Britain’s sole representative in the competition after Lois Toulson missed out on a qualifying spot.

Five days after claiming bronze in the 10m synchronised event together, the pair returned to the Aquatics Centre on Monday with the aim of qualifying for the individual event.

After easing through the preliminary rounds, both reached the semi-finals, where Spendolini-Sirieix put in a brilliant display, scoring 367.00 points overall to sit behind Chinese divers Hongchan Quan and Yuxi Chen, who finished first and second, respectively.

Toulson finished strongly with a 65.60 on her final dive to push her up the leaderboard, but fell just short of the top 12 qualifying positions with a 13th-placed finish.

“(Lyles) is hugely important,” said Coe. “Look, I have to be relatively agnostic, but if I’m wearing a promoter’s hat, then him winning last night was important because he’s now creating a narrative that is heading us back into Usain Bolt territory.

“It’s a recognizable face, a face that have now got young people talking about. And I know that not just from being in the stadium here, but from friends of mine who’ve got young kids. Breaking news: Zharnel Hughes out of tonight’s 200m heats

Britain’s dreadful day in the athletics has continued following Molly Caudery’s shock pole vault exit, with Zharnel Hughes pulling out of the men’s 200m with a tight hamstring.

Hughes had been adamant that he was fully recovered from the grade two hamstring tear that he suffered earlier this year, but he admitted after going out of the 100m that it had disrupted his preparations and the Olympics had come too soon. The 200m heats will take place this evening, with Hughes still hoping to make the 4x100m relay, where Britain have a chance of a medal.

A Team GB statement said that Hughes had “hamstring tightness which requires monitoring for the next 48 hours” and added that “no decision has been taken” with regard to the relay.

After exiting the 100m at the semi-final stage on Sunday, Hughes said: “Race sharpness is my issue. If we had more races, you know that I am a better performer than this. The road sometimes can be rocky.”

Alekna leads the way in men’s discus

Lithuania’s world record-holder Mykolas Alekna has shown he is the man to beat in the men’s discus after his leading throw in today’s preliminary round.

The 21-year-old fouled on his first effort then stepped into the circle to throw 67.47 metres on his second before calling it a day with his spot in the final locked up.

“I am confident with my throws, so I knew how to prepare and what to do before I came here. I knew I could do a good throw,” said Alekna, a world silver and bronze medallist. “I did not think about the first one too much, and I am happy for the second one.

“This circle is perfect. I expect long throws.”

Totally heartbreaking. It’s not the Olympic experience I was hoping for, I’m really sorry for everyone watching back home. But it’s an Olympic experience and I have to learn from it.

11:38 AM BST

The latest from the women’s pole vault

A total of 20 athletes have made it through to Wednesday’s final, having cleared 4.20m and 4.40m without a foul. Given that was sufficient for qualification, Caudery’s decision to go straight in at 4.50m will come under further scrutiny.

Molly Caudery is out of the pole vault

Having consoled her eliminated team-mate Holly Bradshaw, Caudery is now out of the competition herself. She failed to record a height after failing to clear 4.55m in three attempts. This is a major shock and disappointment for Team GB. Her season’s-best was the best in the world by four centimetres, this was not the cards.

11:08 AM BST

Spendolini-Sirieix and Toulson through to diving semi-finals

10:28 AM BST

Bad news for Holly Bradshaw in the pole vault

Holly Bradshaw’s pole vault qualification is over following three failures at 4.40m – she was in tears trackside and being consoled by her team-mate Molly Caudery. Bradshaw was a bronze medallist in Tokyo and, while not among the favourites here, was hoping for one last championship final. She intends to retire at the end of this year and has already set up a coffee-making business. Caudery had started out at 4.55m and missed her first vault at a height that should be straightforward for her. She has two more attempts.

10:25 AM BST

Jessie Knight through in the women’s 400m hurdle repechage

Jessie Knight has squeezed through the 400m hurdles semi-finals via the new repechage after she missed out in the initial heat. She looked to be going out but a final lean, Noah Lyles-style, was enough to get second place by 0.005sec.

The women’s pole vault qualification is also ongoing. Holly Bradshaw has gone over in her second attempt at 4.20m. Molly Caudery has passed at that height and still having a lie-down in the shade while she awaits what should be a routine qualification for Wednesday’s final.

Team GB interest in diving, pole vault and women’s 400m hurdles

Good morning and welcome to live coverage of day 10 of the 2024 Olympic Games and we start at the Aquatics Centre where Team GB Louis Toulson and Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix are up in the women’s 10-metre platform.

Spendolini-Sirieix and Toulson earned a hard-fought bronze medal in the women’s synchronised 10m platform last week and dive as individuals today.

The pair jumped into second at the end of round two, but entering the more difficult dives, they could only post 60.3 in the third round, causing them to tumble into fifth.

They responded well in the final rounds, scoring a 77.76 on their final dive and following a nervous wait their spot on the podium was all but confirmed after nearest rivals Canada could only score 68.16 on their last dive

After that at 9.40am, Holly Bradshaw begins starts her fourth Olympic pole vault challenge after achieving Team GB’s first medal in the sport three years ago in Tokyo. No Olympian has competed in four pole vault finals at the Games, giving Bradshaw a chance of making history over the coming days.

Bradshaw, who almost retired last year following the death of her father, said: “It feels pretty surreal to be going to my fourth [Olympics].
