A court in Peru on Monday suspended the money laundering trial of three-time presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori, citing errors in the indictment.
The 49-year-old daughter of ex-President Alberto Fujimori was on trial for allegedly taking money from scandal-tainted Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht to fund failed presidential bids in 2011 and 2016.
She is charged with money laundering, organized crime, obstruction of justice and making false declarations.
Fujimori had already spent 16 months in pre-trial detention before being freed ahead of the 2021 presidential elections, which she also lost.
Prosecutors had sought a 30-year prison sentence for Fujimori, and a 15-year ban on her holding public office — which would rule her out for elections in 2026.
A judge ruled Monday that the charge sheet had been “flawed” and would have to be corrected if there is to be a new trial.
This came after the Constitutional Court annulled the charges against one of Fujimori’s co-defendants.
Prosecutors will be able to appeal Monday’s ruling.
