The dam unleashed a torrent of water toward four villages in the Karabash district of the Chelyabinsk region.
A reservoir damn collapsed in the Ural Mountains region of Chelyabinsk on Friday night, forcing residents of nearby villages to evacuate their homes.
The dam at the Kialimskoye reservoir was unable to hold back rising waters due to heavy rainfall and broke, impacting four villages in the nearby region.
Videos shared on social media showed the damn destroyed by a large body of water which pouted into the surrounding area. One video showed water engulfing cars and homes nearby.
According to Russian state media, the four villages that were impacted were Kialim, Mukhametovo, Baydashevo and Karasevo.
A local official said around 200 people live in the area, as reported by state-owned RIA Novosti news agency.
Authorities in the Karabash district declared a state of emergency after the dam collapsed.
Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry said that temporary shelters were set up in two local schools to support those who had been evacuated.
The Kialimskoye reservoir was built in 1979 and is located 90 kilometres northwest of the city of Chelyabinsk.
