Russia strikes injure 16 in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region

Officials in southeastern Ukraine said Monday that Russian airstrikes injured at least 16 people in the city of Zaporizhzhia.

Ivan Fedorov, governor of the Zaporizhzhia region, said on Telegram the attacks also damaged 13 apartment buildings, educational institutions, cars, garages and private residences.

Ukraine’s military said Russia attacked the country overnight with four aerial drones and two guided missiles.

Ukrainian air defense shot down three of the four Russian drones, the military said.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said Monday it intercepted four Ukrainian aerial drones over the Belgorod region and another four over the Kursk region.

Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said one drone damaged several cars and two apartments, while two other drones damaged the roof of an industrial building and a playground.

The latest fighting came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the United States to seek increased support for his country’s effort to halt the invasion Russia launched in 2022.

Zelenskyy on Sunday toured an ammunition factory in the state of Pennsylvania that produces some of the munitions being sent to Ukraine’s military.

“I emphasized the dedication of the workers, which is truly inspiring—they are helping Ukraine stand strong in our fight for freedom,” Zelenskyy said on X early Monday.

Zelenskyy is also set to speak this week at the United Nations, and to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden.
