Russian drones attack Ukraine's Izmail port for second consecutive day

Officials in Ukraine’s Odesa region said Thursday that Russian drones attacked the southern port city of Izmail for a second consecutive night, destroying an administrative building and injuring two people inside a house.

The drone attacks were part of a wave of 38 drones that Russia launched overnight, the Ukrainian air force said.

Three of the drones crossed into neighboring Romania, Ukraine’s military said. Following Russian drone attacks on Izmail the previous night, the Romanian National Defense Ministry said Wednesday it boosted its airspace surveillance measures, including using two F-16 fighter jets to monitor the situation.

Ukraine’s military said Thursday the country’s air defenses shot down 25 of 38 the Russian drones, with intercepts taking place over the Cherkasy, Kherson, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy and Zhytomyr regions.

Oleksandr Prokudin, the governor of Kherson, said on Telegram a Russian drone killed at least one person.

Zhytomyr Governor Vitaliy Bunechko said falling debris from destroyed drones damaged 10 houses and an infrastructure facility.

The head of Kyiv’s military administration, Serhiy Popko, said a large number of drones attacked the capital region from multiple directions, but that air defenses shot them all down.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said Thursday it destroyed 11 Ukrainian aerial drones over Kursk, Belgorod and Russia-occupied Crimea. Russian defenses also destroyed two uncrewed boats that were traveling toward Crimea, the ministry said.

Kursk Governor Alexey Smirnov reported one person was injured after falling debris set fire to a home.

Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said Ukrainian drone attacks damaged a home and a bus.

Officials in the Kaluga region in western Russia said Thursday an MI-28 military helicopter crashed, killing the pilots on board.
