A Russian court said Tuesday it will hold the next hearing in the espionage trial of U.S. journalist Evan Gershkovich on Thursday, nearly a month earlier than previously planned.
The court said the change was done at the request of Gershkovich’s defense team.
The first hearing in the closed-door trial took place June 26, days before a U.N. working group said Russia was arbitrarily detaining Gershkovich.
Russian authorities arrested the Wall Street Journal correspondent in March 2023 on spying charges that he and the newspaper deny. Russia has produced no evidence to substantiate its allegations.
The U.S. State Department has declared Gershkovich to be wrongfully detained.
