‘She’s doing much better today.’: U.S gymnast Jade Carey’s mom provides health update

U.S. gymnast Jade Carey of Phoenix said it wasn’t nerves that induced her untimely fall in the on-floor exercise in Sunday’s gymnastics qualifying round at the Olympics. It was an undisclosed illness, she revealed to Olympic.com.

On Monday morning, Carey’s mom, Danielle Greenberg, updated TODAY on her status: “She’s doing much better today,” she said.

“Trying to hydrate, get some food in, ready to go.”

After powering through health issues to perform in the women’s gymnastics qualification round of the 2024 Paris Olympics on July 28, the Mountain Ridge High School alumnus took to X to express gratitude to fans for support and let the world know she “gave it everything she had.”

The 24-year-old phenom told reporters that she “hasn’t been able to eat or anything” and had little energy and sense of what was going on in her mind.

Carey won the gold medal in the floor competition in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, but she struggled in the event on Sunday. However, she excelled in the vault, scoring 14.433 across two attempts to reach the vault final. That was the third-highest score behind leader Simone Biles of the United States (15.300) and Brazilian Rebeca Andrade (14.683).

In the floor event, Carey stepped out of bounds and fell after her last tumbling pass. The stumble resulted in a low score of 10.633, 3.5 points lower than her score a month ago at the Olympic Trials, ending her chances of defending the Olympic title. Carey’s execution score finished at 6.433 out of 10.

This all has gone wrong for Team USA amid a visible injury to Biles. She performed with her ankle taped up though she still excelled. Her coach said she had no concerns about Biles not being able to compete in the upcoming events.
