Team USA soccer star Sophia Smith got her birthday wish.
During a recent interview with TODAY’s Hoda Kotb, Smith talked about her Aug. 10 birthday, which also falls on the same day her team went against Brazil at the Paris Olympics.
During their conversation, Hoda hinted that she knew what Smith wanted for her 24th birthday.
“We have an idea,” Hoda teased while also manifesting Team USA’s future win.
“There’s only one thing I want for my birthday,” Smith replied with a smile. “That would be the best birthday ever, and we would have the best birthday party afterwards.”
Well, Smith got exactly what she hoped for. On Aug. 10, Smith and her teammates, who are part of the U.S. women’s national soccer team, won gold when they defeated Brazil 1-0. The win was huge for the team as it was the first gold medal the U.S. women’s soccer team had won since the 2012 London Olympics.
In the game, Team USA’s Mallory Swanson scored the winning goal. Swanson made her Olympic debut in 2016 at the Rio de Janeiro games where the U.S. women’s national soccer team didn’t even make it to the podium. However, she was back on the team again for the Tokyo Olympics that were held in 2021, and that year, Team USA won bronze.
During her interview with Hoda, Smith, who was joined by Swanson and their other teammate Trinity Rodman, said they already have a creative name for their group.
“We have a proposal for our trio name to be ‘Triple Espresso.’ So we’re going to put that out into the air and let people run with that, because we like that as well,” Rodman said.
But it may take some getting used to from the team. When TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie called them by their new nickname, the girls admitted that it could use a little bit of work.
“Do you like the way it sounds?” Savannah asked.
“We’ll see,” Swanson replied with a laugh.
