Southwest Florida’s Mason Laur will swim for a chance to compete at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday night.
As the top seed in Tuesday’s semifinals of the 200 butterfly, the Barron Collier graduate finished second in his heat and third overall, securing a spot in the final round.
Laur’s race will air live on NBC with coverage of the Olympic Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis beginning at 8 p.m. The top two finishers will make the team for Paris.
Laur, a junior at the University of Florida, swam the fastest race in the preliminary rounds for the 200 fly, finishing in 1:55.09.
In high school, Laur captured three state titles — two in the 200 IM and one in the 200 fly — and helped propel Barron Collier to a state championship in 2019. He was named the Naples Daily News Boys Swimmer of the Year in 2019 and 2020.
Laur has put together an All-American career at Florida, competing at the NCAA championships in the 200 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM. He previously qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Trials in 2021, where he finished 42nd in the 200 fly. He has made a significant jump, coming into the Paris trials as the fifth seed.
