Steelers owner Art Rooney II on whether Aaron Rodgers will sign with team: ‘Pointing in that direction’

With the situation still unsettled, it’s a bold move for Rooney to talk so positively and publicly about a possible signing. If negotiations fall apart, the Steelers’ owner is going to look extremely foolish for creating false hope among fans. Then again, Rooney presumably has a pretty good idea of how things are going. If he feels good enough to drop two optimistic quotes about Rodgers, there’s probably a reason for it.

After losing Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in free agency, the Steelers turned their attention to Rodgers. While they weren’t the only team courting the 41-year-old free agent quarterback, the Steelers were among the most aggressive clubs aiming to sign him. Rodgers met with the team Friday and “had a really productive day,” per Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. Rodgers then reportedly threw with newly acquired Steelers receiver DK Metcalf over the weekend, furthering rumors Rodgers would sign with Pittsburgh.

Rodgers started all 17 games for the New York Jets last season. He completed 63 percent of his passes, with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Mason Rudolph currently sits atop the Steelers’ quarterback depth chart after he re-joined the franchise in March.
