Corison 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon St. Helena Napa Valley California
Cathy Corison studied biology at Claremont and then transferred to University of California at Davis where she earned her degree in enology. She quickly made her mark on California winemaking and became known for her elegant, restrained, and relatively low alcohol wines (12 to 13 percent alcohol by volume) while her Napa contemporaries were producing fruit and alcohol bombs with ABV up to or exceeding 15 percent. Cathy still strives to make lower alcohol wines noted for their restraint and elegance, but like all other winemakers, she finds that climate change and higher temperatures pose a challenge. All this said, she is one of our favorite producers and makes consistent, delectable wines year after year, and her wines are very well reviewed by other colleagues whom we respect. Her 2020 Cab has aromas of black plum, fennel frond, cigar box, and cassis. Elegant and fruit forward on the palate it offers flavors of black cherry, dried Mediterranean herbs, and crushed violet petals all wrapped in a smooth tannic sheath.

Accendo Cellars 2021 Sauvignon Blanc Napa California
Accendo Cellars was founded in 2013 by Bart and Daphne Araujo and continues to be managed by both as well as the second-generation Araujos, Jaime and Greg. We recently had a chance to taste all 10 vintages of their amazing Sauvignon Blanc wines and can tell you from personal experience that you can either drink this wine now or lay it down for a decade or more. Grapes for the 2021 are sourced from Rancho Pequeño in Oakville and Juliana Vineyard in Pope Valley. Brilliant straw colored in the glass, it has aromas of Bartlett pear, kumquat, freesia, and lemon blossom. On the mid palate it is voluptuous and Rubenesque—impressive even for a full-bodied white wine—with flavors of pear, apple, white pepper, and crushed oyster shell. Winemaker Françoise Peschon has been making this excellent wine for over 10 years and she’s nailed it again.

Penfolds 2018 St. Henri Shiraz
On their boat voyage from the old-world, Mary and Dr. Christopher Penfold carried vines in their luggage and planted them upon their arrival in Australia, and in 1844 Penfolds Wine Company was established at their Magill Estate. Today winemaking is overseen by Peter Gago and in a recent Zoom tasting with him we both fell in love with St. Henri Shiraz. Peter admitted that while most people collect Penfolds Grange, there is an increasing number of wine lovers collecting St. Henri as well. The 2018 is crimson to purple colored in the glass with aromas of ripe red pepper, black licorice, and pomegranate. Silky tannins pave the way for flavors of cranberry, crushed violet petals, blackberry, and dark cocoa powder.

Joseph Drouhin 2022 Beaune Clos des Mouches Premier Cru Burgundy France
The venerable maison of Joseph Drouhin is currently run by his four great-grandchildren who were all born in the 1960s. Working in the vineyards with their father, Robert, gave them valuable experience, not only in the business side, but also in the tradition of winemaking and grape growing. The vineyards where grapes for Beaune Clos des Mouches are grown total almost 16 acres and continue to produce this remarkable wine year after year, but we both feel the 2022 is exceptional. It has aromas of freesia, honeysuckle, Granny Smith apple, and toasted almonds. It is crisp and lively in the midpalate with flavors of lemon curd, acacia honey, mandarin orange peel, and white truffle. Drink now or over the next 12 years.

Domaine De La Romanée Conti 2020 La Tache Vosne-Romanée Burgundy France
Domaine Del La Romanée Conti has seven Grand Cru vineyards, and we had the opportunity to taste all of them recently, with each one as amazing as the next. We argued over it and decided that La Tâche showed the best, but it was a tough decision to pick just one. Having visited this site often, we both agree that La Tâche is really one of the most beautiful single vineyards we have ever seen. All of the DRC vineyards are plowed by horse, not tractor, and the vines and grapes are tended only by hand. The 2020 is cherry red in color with enticing aromas of clove, nutmeg, dark chocolate, purple plum, and black cherry. The tannins are silky smooth with flavors of cassis, black cherry, fennel pollen, and powdered dark chocolate.

Craighill Best Wine Key
Designed in collaboration with sommelier Andre Huston Mack, easy-to-handle Best Wine Key lives up to its slightly cocky name. A deft swipe of its serrated foil knife removes even the thickest foil in one circumnavigation, while its multi-ratcheted swingarm turns the often-clumsy act of cork removal into one graceful, fluid motion. The original industrial stainless steel and red rubber version has just been joined by more elegant siblings in black and tortoise.

Perfect for your friends whose interests straddle art, wine, culture, and history, the bundle includes three bottles of wine from the domain’s best vineyard blocks that are fermented separately and aged in oak for 16 months before blending.

Chateau d’Esclans 2021 Garrus Rosé Cotes de Provence Provence France
Sacha Lichine acquired Chateau d’Esclans in Provence in 2006. The estate is situated just north of St. Tropez and many people may know the chateau as the original home of Whispering Angel rosé wine. While Whispering Angel is a perfectly fine entry offering, Sacha’s Garrus Rosé makes the former pale in comparison. If it weren’t for the pink color, Garrus 2021 could fool you into thinking you’re drinking a fine white Burgundy. It has aromas of white peach, apricot puree, and caramelized pineapple and flavors of pear, apple, candied orange peel, and luscious crème brulée with a bright acid finish.
