Chelsea march to the final

Chelsea survived VAR controversy to earn a 1-0 victory over Tottenham, 3-0 on aggregate, and advance to the final of the Carabao Cup this evening.

The Blues arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium with one foot already in the final, and effectively cemented their place at Wembley early in the piece, when Antonio Rudiger rose to bundle the ball past a despairing Pierluigi Gollini, and increase their advantage to 3.

Then VAR saved the day. Not once, not twice, but on three occasions it reversed incorrect decisions from a poor on-field officiating side, meaning that the sentiment around the technology was rather different to that expressed around the Premier League on a weekly basis.

And while it will be a bitter pill for Antonio Conte and Spurs to swallow, it helped Thomas Tuchel set an extraordinary record.

Tuchel makes club history

In guiding the Blues to the final, Tuchel became the first manager in the club’s history to make it to the final of the FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup, notching the accolade in an even more impressive 350 days.

While the sentiment around the sacking of Frank Lampard in January 2021 was understandable, there is no doubt that Tuchel has proved the perfect successor to the club legend, and threatens to bring more silverware to west London this season.
