Tiger Woods is returning to golf. The Genesis Invitational announced Friday that Woods, the tournament’s host, will play in the tournament next week at Torrey Pines.

Woods has not played competitive outdoor golf since The Open last summer. He has made appearances at the exhibition PNC Championship with son Charlie, and at TGL, the indoor golf league he co-founded. Most recently, Woods’ Jupiter Links Golf Club defeated Rory McIlroy’s Boston Common Golf Club. It’s difficult to determine Woods’ fitness for a full tournament based on his performance in front of a simulator, but he swung the club well enough to help his team to victory last week.

Woods has fought through a range of injuries and surgeries in recent years, and the effect on his golf game has been noticeable. He has not finished a major other than the Masters since the 2020 season, and has only posted a 47th- and 60th-place finish in that time at Augusta National.

Most recently, Woods suffered the loss of his mother earlier this week. Tida Woods, one of the most important forces in Woods’ life, was 80 years old at the time of her passing.

The Genesis Invitational was moved from the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles to Torrey Pines because of the effects of nearby wildfires in Los Angeles. The tournament will begin on Feb. 13.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
